SJM Statement on the DC Siege

We watched in horror on Wednesday as a mob stormed the U.S. Capitol to try to bar a routine constitutional obligation: certification of the presidential election.

We are a nation of laws, and this heart-breaking and violent assault on democracy occurred at the very spot where laws are made. Mob rule, marked by Confederate flags, reigned for hours as the lawbreakers easily overtook the paltry law enforcement presence.

And, as many observers noticed, that presence was in stark contrast to the large numbers of law enforcement personnel usually at the ready when people of color organize protests.
The despicable and fatal siege, incited by the president of the United States and his allies, underscored a tragic truth: our democracy is broken, and we are in desperate need of healing.

Many questions remain unanswered.

But we do have the answer to one question: Where do we, as a peace-loving community, go from here?

First, Social Justice Matters will continue to focus on working toward social justice by bringing people together, affecting positive change, serving as a community resource and facilitating meaningful discussions.

Second, SJM will continue its commitment to provide a safe place to explore critical issues. To that end, please know that our board members are available to give you a space to talk, be heard, feel supported and suggest how SJM can help you and our community. Contact us at president@socialjusticematters.org or secretary@socialjusticematters.org.

We will face this as we have faced other challenges and obstacles: together. We remain here for you.
