“Black Lives Matter: A Fight For Change”

Author: Jennifer Popper (journalist from Tap into Plainfield)

Through photography and words, take a step back and look at a moment in United States history where immense civil unrest takes place during the worst global pandemic in recent time. This photography exhibit brings further awareness to the continued inequalities and treatment of Black people in the U.S. by showing those who put their lives at risk during this unprecedented time. The images presented, from May & June 2020, document the George Floyd March in Newark, the Black Lives Matter March in Scotch Plains, the Edison March Against Injustice, and the Plainfield Anti-Violence Protest.

Starting at 11:30AM, photographer Kalani Jimenez-Mackson will present a program on the importance of photojournalism and its ability to control our narratives with the truth. Photojournalism techniques, philosophy, and process will be the main topics in this exploration of image and photography.

This is a free, IN-PERSON program. Registration is not required. The exhibit will from August 13th to October 8th, in the Anne Louise Davis Gallery.

This arts education program is supported, in part, by a 2022 History, Education, Arts Reaching Thousands (HEART) Grant from the Union County Board of Commissioners.
