Juneteenth 2022 - “In Solidarity, We are One”

SJM Juneteenth 2022 will offer a variety of educational, arts, and sports activities around our theme of “In Solidarity, We are One.” Activities will engage families in a Juneteenth-themed carnival atmosphere, encouraging them to know the history, applaud the achievements and tenacity of the Black population, and recognize relevance to the challenges we face together as a community. This community event welcomes and embraces all.

The SJM Juneteenth Committee has partnered with the Township of Scotch Plains, Fanwood Borough and other Union County organizations to bring this celebration to our community. The 2022 Juneteenth Celebration will take place at historic Shady Rest Golf and Country Club on Saturday, June 18, 2022. Activities will include speakers and performers from Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School’s Black Student Union (BSU), who will present/speak/interpret the history and meaning to them of Juneteenth. There will be live music, Juneteenth collage workshops, mini golf, a double dutch exhibition with crowd participation, carnival and lawn games, tours of the historic Shady Rest museum, face painting, food trucks, vendors and more.

There is no admission charge. Attendees can choose to buy refreshments and novelties. Attendees are welcome to bring their own picnic meals.

The event venue is accessible to people with disabilities. BYOC (Bring your own chairs)

Support Juneteenth Ad Journal

With our expanded offerings this year, we are in great need of your assistance. Even with the generous funding through a Union County HEART grant and sponsorship from PSEG, YOUR SUPPORT will be the key to a successful Juneteenth 2022.

Consider placing an ad in our ad journal, or making a donation. Your donations will be used towards rental of carnival booths and carnival games, supplies and materials to engage our kids and amplify both our sound system and publicity outreach. Your generosity will be acknowledged in the ad book.

Volunteers are needed to solicit local businesses for the ad journal and to help the day of the celebration. Contact Tashira Wheeler or Michelle Burwell to sign-up as a volunteer.

To submit an ad for the journal, complete and mail this Ad Journal Form.

Volunteers Needed on June 18th

We need volunteers to help out in so many ways the day of the festivities--to welcome guests, oversee mini golf and other games, work at a booth, face paint, and more! Email co-chairs Tashira Wheeler or Michelle Burwell to find an activity and slot that works for you.
