Race, Empowerment and Experience - A Virtual Author Visit with Cheryl Willis Hudson and Wade Hudson

Libraries are places of engagement, a platform for all to come together. In 2020, the Libraries of Union County Consortium will sponsor a series of virtual visits to explore the subject of Race, Empowerment and Experience. Starting off this series, we will be joined by two prolific, award-winning authors and publishers: co-founders of Just Us Books, Inc., Cheryl Willis Hudson and Wade Hudson, to share their experience and talk about their most recent project: co-editing the collection "The Talk: Conversations about Race, Love and Truth."

CHERYL WILLIS HUDSON is an author, editor and publisher of children's books. She is co-founder and editorial director of Just Us Books, Inc., an independent company that focuses on Black interest books for children and young adults. Cheryl has authored over two dozen books for young children including Brave. Black. First: 50+ African American Women Who Changed the World; Bright Eyes, Brown Skin, (with Bernette Ford) AFRO-BETS ABC Book, Good Morning, Baby, Glo Goes Shopping, From Where I Stand and Clothes I Love to Wear (Marimba Books); Hands Can and Construction Zone (Candlewick Press). WADE HUDSON is an author and publisher. Libraries are places of engagement, a platform for all to come together. In 2020, the Libraries of Union County Consortium will sponsor a series of virtual visits to explore the subject of Race, Empowerment and Experience. Continuing this series, we will be joined by a prolific, award-winning author Derrick Barnes. Mr. Barnes will share his experience and talk about his work, including his most recent book "I Am Every Good Thing."

DERRICK BARNES is from Kansas City, MO. He is a graduate of Jackson State University with a BA degree in Marketing. After graduation, he became the first African American male creative copywriter in the history of Hallmark Cards. He is the author of the critically acclaimed picture book CROWN: An Ode To The Fresh Cut (Denene Millner Books/Agate Bolden) which won a multitude of literary awards, including two 2018 Ezra Jack Keats Awards, the Gold Medal from the Society of Illustrators, the Coretta Scott King Author Honor, Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor, Newbery Honor, and the Caldecott Honor, and the Kirkus Prize For Young Readers.) His follow up to CROWN, entitled The King of Kindergarten, published by Nancy Paulsen Books/Penguin in July 2019, debuted on the New York Times Best Sellers List. On September 1, 2020, Derrick's 12th trade title, I AM EVERY GOOD THING, was released, and debuted at #5 on the New York Times Bestseller List.
